About the workshop:
Do you find yourself gravitating towards drawing one type of body image in your work? Or maybe you’re frustrated that you don’t see your own body image reflected back at you in the comics you consume. In this workshop, we’re going to challenge the rampant perceptions of “big” as “bad,” and discuss fatphobia and bias in the context of art, but also the culture at large. We will look at examples of big characters in various types of stories, from classic children’s books to web comics to modern day graphic novels – and then embark on the adventure of drawing our own.
Date:
This is a 2-hour online workshop on Wednesday, May 14th at 4pm-6pm PST/7pm-9pm EST. The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Everyone who signs up will receive a Zoom link via email and then a recording of the workshop afterwards.
What you need:
• Bring writing and drawing materials. We’ll be doing some freewriting and then drawing short comics. You can work with any tools you enjoy, like watercolor, digital drawing, or colored pencils.
About the teacher:
Nicole Testa LaLiberty is a cartoonist and illustrator located in Stratford, Connecticut. Her primarily autobiographical comics focus on the themes of love, family, body image, mental health, and food – and how all of those things can often intersect. She has exhibited at numerous comics and zine fairs, including Short Run Seattle, SPX, Nonfiction Comics Fest, Comic Arts Brooklyn, and the Feminist Zinefest.
