About the workshop:

In this 3-hr workshop, we will be focused on how comics artists process grief through the creation of comics. We will be looking at how several artists write and draw about grief including: Dancing at the Pity Party by Tyler Feder, The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui, The Waiting by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim, and A Fire Story by Brian Fies. This workshop will include reading portions of several comics/graphic novels and drawing your own comics through prompts and exercises.

Date:

This is a 3-hour online workshop on Saturday, April 12th at 10am-1pm PST/1pm-4pm EST. The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Everyone who signs up will receive a Zoom link via email and then a recording of the workshop afterwards.

Things to know before signing up:

Grief will look different for everyone and is not a linear process. We recommend this workshop after you’ve been able to sit with grief for a bit (not taking it right after a major loss). Participants will be invited to share with small groups about their loss, though it won’t be required. The workshop teacher is not a certified mental health counselors. Our goal is to create a space for people to draw about someone or something they’ve lost, honoring their loss. Individuals will always be invited to take breaks, leave early if they need to and protect their mental health. We also want to recognize that grief can be related to a person, a pet, a relationship, a place, or something else!

What to expect:

Tears, community, art that honors someone or something important to you.

About the teacher:

Ali Holmes, she/her, is an artist specializing in memoir comics, graphic nonfiction, and art education. I am both a practicing artist and an educator. My future goals include writing a graphic memoir and hopefully getting it published. I’m currently working on a shorter graphic nonfiction piece about how to start your own union and hope to publish it later this year in 2024. I believe art is a form of communication and want to use art to help you tell your stories and build community power. Let’s create something beautiful together!

To make them affordable, all of our classes and workshops are offered at a sliding scale cost.

Supporter - This payment level pitches in a little extra toward the teacher’s income and helps pay artists to create new comics at Crucial. Thanks for your support!
Standard - This is the basic rate for the class, which covers our costs.
Discount - We want people of all income levels in our classes, so choose this rate if you paying the standard rate is a stretch for you.

We set aside three spots in each class to be offered for free to people who would find it a hardship to pay the discount rate for any reason. These free spots are first-come, first-serve. If you would like to take a class for free, please send us a short email about yourself, what class you would like to take, and why. If a free spot is still available, we’ll send you a discount code to register for free! Email: editors@crucialcomix.com
