19 in stock

About the workshop:

Drawing comics about family is complicated. In this two-hour workshop, cartoonist Sanika Phawde will help offer prompts and examples to guide participants through drawing a one-page comic about their own families. It’s often tricky to tell a complex family story in a way that is thoughtful and respectful, while also being true to your lived experience. Sanika will share examples from their own work to explain how they playfully approached difficult emotional realities. We will also read and discuss comics by incredible cartoonists like Adrian Tomine, Lucy Knisley, Naveid Mahdavian, and Liana Finck.

Date:

This is a 2-hour online workshop on Thursday, December 12th from 3pm-5pm PST (6pm-8pm EST). The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Everyone who signs up will receive a Zoom link via email and then a recording of the workshop afterwards.

What you need:

• Drawing supplies. You can draw on paper or digitally, whatever you prefer. You’re welcome to use whatever materials you have on hand, whether it’s colored pencils, watercolors, or ink pens.

About the teacher:

A graduate of Parsons School of Design, they currently teach illustration at MassArt and RISD.

To make them affordable, all of our classes and workshops are offered at a sliding scale cost.

Supporter - This payment level pitches in a little extra toward the teacher’s income and helps pay artists to create new comics at Crucial. Thanks for your support!
Standard - This is the basic rate for the class, which covers our costs.
Discount - We want people of all income levels in our classes, so choose this rate if you paying the standard rate is a stretch for you.

We set aside three spots in each class to be offered for free to people who would find it a hardship to pay the discount rate for any reason. These free spots are first-come, first-serve. If you would like to take a class for free, please send us a short email about yourself, what class you would like to take, and why. If a free spot is still available, we’ll send you a discount code to register for free! Email: editors@crucialcomix.com
