About the workshop:
Unfold new possibilities for storytelling in this hands-on, two-hour workshop exploring the art of forms and folds in comics! Learn how to reimagine the single-page zine, experiment with accordion folds, and dive into the basics of pop-up techniques to transform your comics into interactive and tactile experiences. Jillian will share examples from their own work as well as inspiring creations by other cartoonists to demonstrate how unconventional forms can enhance storytelling. Whether you’re a seasoned creator or a curious beginner, this workshop will help you think beyond the flat page.
Date:
This is a 2-hour online workshop on Wednesday April 23rd, 5-7pm PST/8-10pm EST. The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Everyone who signs up will receive a Zoom link via email and then a recording of the workshop afterwards.
What you need:
• Letter size paper (printer paper or heavier cardstock, if available), tape, a glue stick, a ruler, scissors, and drawing materials. (Optional: Utility knife, bone folder, tabloid size paper)
About the teacher:
Jillian D. King is a Boston-based design strategist, cartoonist, and graduate of MassArt’s Industrial Design program. Their work explores how physical forms—from folds to pop-ups—shape storytelling, blending whimsy with everyday narratives. Jillian creates poetry comics, tiny paper books, and other tactile storytelling experiences, drawing inspiration the details of daily life.
